Neurotoxins

Restore a youthful appearance without erasing your expressions

How you feel as you age should be defined by you, not your wrinkles. With injectable anti-wrinkle treatments like Botox, Dysport and the new long-lasting neurotoxin Daxxify, we can bring back your skin’s smooth, youthful texture and the confidence that comes with it. These excellent neurotoxin products give you options that can better fit your needs and preferences.

Neurotoxins soften wrinkles caused by everyday facial expressions such as laughing, furrowing your brow, raising your eyebrows or squinting in the sun. With a regular treatment schedule, neurotoins can help prevent existing wrinkles from deepening and even stop new wrinkles before they start. Resurrect Skin MD’s experienced injectors ensure your results are noticeable but maintain your natural expressiveness.

What Is a Neurotoxin?

Neurotoxins (NT) minimize the appearance of unwanted facial lines by temporarily relaxing the underlying muscles. When micro-doses of a neurotoxin are injected into a muscle, it temporarily blocks the nerve impulses that signal the muscle to contract. Because the muscle does not receive the signal, it does not activate, and the overlying skin does not crease. The result is a smoother, softer-looking and renewed expression.

Botox

Botox historically has been the most used and well-known product in the category of neurotoxins. It has been 20 years since Botox first received FDA approval for wrinkle reduction. In that time, physicians have developed ways to address many other aesthetic concerns. Year after year, Botox tops the list of the most in-demand nonsurgical procedures performed worldwide.

We now have other neurotoxins that give options for our patients.

Dysport

Dysport was approved in 2009 for the cosmetic treatment of frown lines. Botox and Dysport have the same active ingredient with a slightly different formula. This difference allows Dysport to spread more after it is injected, which can make it ideal for treating larger areas with just a few injections. Botox is less prone to diffusing, making it well-suited for treating smaller areas.

Some patients experience quicker results with Dysport, noticing a reduction in wrinkles in only two to three days. Botox generally produces noticeable results around five to seven days. Both injectables reach their peak results around two weeks and last three to four months.

Daxxify

Daxxify is an exciting new product approved in September 2022 for the cosmetic treatment of frown lines. It is manufactured by Revance Aesthetics, the company that makes the RHA Collection of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.

Although similar in its cosmetic use to Botox and Dysport, Daxxify has unique peptide technology that allows it to last anywhere from 6-9 months. This proprietary technology also allows it to be stored at room temperature, while Botox and Dysport require refrigeration.

Your treatment recommendations will be customized from start to finish, from which product to choose, the ideal number of injections and placement of that product, to any complementary treatments that will give you the most comprehensive results. Our patients achieve the best and most long-lasting benefits for their skin when they follow a thoughtfully designed and personalized long-term care plan.

What Are the Benefits of Neurotoxins?

There are many reasons neurotoxins have been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for decades.

  • Minimally-invasive treatment
  • Convenient, comfortable procedure
  • Versatile use
  • No required downtime
  • Botox is FDA-approved for both cosmetic and therapeutic use for 3-month results
  • Daxxify has been FDA-approved for cosmetic improvement in wrinkles for 6-months

What Can Neurotoxins Improve?

Neurotoxins are primarily known as wrinkle relaxers. Botox is FDA-approved for the most areas:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “11s”)
  • Crow’s feet

Injectors also use neurotoxins for a growing number of off-label applications, including:

  • Brow lift
  • Bunny lines
  • Lip flip
  • Lip lines
  • Drooping mouth corners
  • Gummy smile correction
  • Chin dimples
  • Masseter muscles (facial slimming)
  • Platysmal (neck) bands

Additionally, Botox is used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Chronic migraine
  • Blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking)
  • Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes)
  • Overactive bladder

Are Neurotoxins and Filler the Same?

Though neurotoxins and dermal fillers are both popular cosmetic injectables designed to reduce signs of aging, they work in different ways and achieve different results.

Neurotoxins minimize the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily blocking muscle movement. They are best suited to lines found in the upper half of the face, as these lines are more likely to be caused by muscle contractions than volume loss and collagen depletion. We call these “dynamic” lines.

Dermal fillers add structure and volume to “static” lines, which are visible whether or not your muscles are active. They are caused by environmental damage, lifestyle habits and the natural loss of volume and breakdown of skin structure that occur with age. Static lines are primarily found in the lower half of the face.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins have something to offer both women and men (just ask Dr. Burns). Most individuals are suitable candidates for these treatments, provided they are healthy and have realistic expectations of what neurotoxins can achieve. Our injectors may recommend other treatments, such as dermal fillers, if they feel they may be more advantageous for your goals.

Many patients inquire about the right time to start NTs. The short answer is that there isn’t one, at least not one that applies to every patient. Some do not start until they are middle-aged with noticeable wrinkles, while others start with small doses at an earlier age as a preventative measure to stop wrinkles before they begin.

What Should I Expect During My Neurotoxin Treatment?

We have a wonderful team of qualified injectors who can administer all of our injectable treatments. With their artful technique, neurotoxins give your skin a renewed, smooth appearance that looks natural and maintains the critical facial expressions in a natural way.

Your NT appointment begins with a consultation. Your injector uses this time to assess the concerns you would like treated, the quality of your skin and your overall appearance goals. After formulating a plan tailored to your needs, your injector cleanses your skin and strategically places injections into the targeted muscles. We utilize the Accuvein light source while administering injections to help us minimize bruising.

Most patients find that NT injections are relatively low on the pain scale. However, we are more than happy to numb you with ice packs or a topical analgesic if that makes you more comfortable.

What Is the Downtime for Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins do not require downtime, but there are a few things you should do after your treatment to ensure the best results:

  • Do not exercise for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures
  • Avoid massaging the treated area for 2-4 hours
  • Avoid lying down or leaning forward for 2-4 hours
  • Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications
  • Do not get other cosmetic services on the treated area for at least 24 hours

Temporary side effects are unusual but may include swelling, bruising or tenderness where the injections were administered. Headaches and flu-like systems are even more uncommon but these typically go away within 24 hours.

At Resurrect Skin MD, we strive for results that work in harmony with your facial features. Good neurotoxin injections should never lead to a frozen appearance. Our highly skilled injectors are adept at delivering beautiful outcomes that leave you looking natural and as vibrant as you feel.

How Long Do Neurotoxins Last?

That answer depends on the product used and the patient themselves. Botox and Dysport injections last three to four months on average. Your results may last longer or shorter depending on how your individual body chemistry reacts to the product. The treated lines will gradually reappear when the NT wears off, restoring your skin to its pre-treatment appearance.

Daxxify has published data from a large group of patients showing results lasting 271 days! Based on this data, the FDA approved its usage for results lasting six months, making Daxxify the longest-acting NT on the market currently. It may last even longer, but just like Botox and Dysport, the results are variable from patient to patient.

Some patients find that the longer they receive neurotoxin injections, the longer they can go between treatments without compromising results. Their muscles become conditioned to the treatment, which helps them maintain a relaxed state with fewer treatments and/or less product.
