What Are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins include popular anti-wrinkle injectables such as Botox, Dysport and Daxxify, which contain a purified form of botulinum toxin that works to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause them. When neurotoxins are injected into common problem areas like the brows or forehead, they block the signals that tell the muscles to contract, leaving the overlying skin smooth and wrinkle-free. The results typically last three to four months, possibly longer.

Neurotoxins vs. Fillers: What's the Difference?

While they are both injectable treatments, neurotoxins and dermal fillers differ significantly in their composition and aesthetic applications:

Neurotoxins

  • Contain purified toxins that relax muscles and soften lines when injected
  • Treat dynamic wrinkles or expression lines caused by muscle movements
  • Produce results within several days after injection
  • Last three to four months (Botox, Dysport) or six to nine months (Daxxify) on average

Fillers

  • Utilize hyaluronic acid or other ingredients to add volume underneath skin
  • Augment and contour areas by filling them in
  • Produce immediate results
  • Last six to 24 months based on area and product used

What Neuromodulators Are Available at Resurrect Skin MD?

Botox

Botox is a widely recognized and popular neurotoxin made with a highly purified form of botulinum toxin. Botox remains one of the most in-demand nonsurgical procedures worldwide and is commonly used to improve wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines.

Dysport

Dysport is similar to Botox but formulated slightly differently, allowing it to spread and diffuse more easily when injected beneath the skin. This makes it ideal for treating larger areas and creating a softer result that some patients prefer. Dysport may also be used to treat people who have developed Botox resistance, as they might respond better to the different formula.

Daxxify

Daxxify is the newest neurotoxin on the market. It’s similar to Botox and Dysport and contains the same active ingredient, but uses a unique peptide technology that enhances its performance as a wrinkle relaxer and allows it to last for almost twice as long in some patients — up to 50% of individuals see results that last for six months. At RSMD, we’re excited to be one of the first aesthetic providers to offer Daxxify.

What Is the Downtime After Neurotoxin Injections?

One of the many appeals of Botox, Dysport and Daxxify is the minimal recovery period. There is technically no downtime after your treatment at RSMD — you are free to immediately return to most of your normal activities without taking time off work or social plans.

However, there are some best practices to follow post-injections:

  • For the first 4 hours: Stay upright and avoid pressure on the treated areas. Do not manipulate or massage the areas. Wait to apply makeup.
  • For 24 hours: Do not engage in activities that raise your body temperature, like intense workouts, hot showers or saunas.

Possible short-term side effects like swelling, redness, bruising at injection sites or headaches typically clear within a few days. Use cool compresses and, if needed, over-the-counter pain medication. We recommend scheduling your appointments at least two weeks prior to important events in case you experience side effects and to allow the product to reach full potency.

What Results Could I Achieve With Neurotoxins?

You may begin seeing improvements within three to five days after your injections as the product takes effect. The full results continue developing gradually over seven to 14 days.

Botox and Dysport generally last three to four months. The longevity of these treatments can vary based on factors such as your individual metabolism, the area treated and the dosage used.

Daxxify boasts a longer duration, with results potentially lasting up to six months and sometimes longer. This extended period of efficacy is a convenient option for those who are familiar with neurotoxins and seeking longer-lasting results.

What Other Injectables Are Available at Resurrect Skin MD?

Kybella

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable specifically designed to reduce submental fat, commonly known as a “double chin.” Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally found in the body that helps to break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the submental area, Kybella targets and permanently destroys fat cells, resulting in a more contoured and defined chin. Due to its effectiveness, Kybella is a popular nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for improving the appearance of the chin and jawline.

What Is the Downtime After Kybella Injections?

Kybella downtime is minimal to moderate. While individual experiences vary, most find they can comfortably resume work and other activities within a couple of days.

Post-treatment, you will notice warmth and swelling at the injection site. You may also experience bruising, redness, numbness or tenderness. These effects generally subside within two weeks. Our staff closely monitors all patients throughout the healing process to address any concerns.

What Results Could I Achieve With Kybella?

Kybella produces gradual results. Most patients start noticing improvements four to six weeks after their initial treatment. This is the amount of time it takes the body to flush out the treated fat cells.

Typically, patients require two to six treatment sessions for optimal fat reduction with Kybella. These appointments are spaced at least one month apart.

The results of Kybella injections are long-lasting, often permanent. Fat cells cannot regenerate after they are dissolved. However, maintaining a stable weight is an important part of preserving your results, as significant weight gain can expand the remaining fat cells and affect your appearance.
