What is Botox?

Botox is the brand name of one of the world’s most popular anti-aging treatments. It is an injectable treatment that temporarily smooths facial lines and wrinkles in the forehead, around the eyes, near the mouth and more for three to six months without surgery or downtime.

At Resurrect Skin MD, we specialize in helping you achieve your desired results with personalized treatment plans tailored to your exact needs. Botox injections take just a few minutes to complete and can fit easily into your existing beauty routine. We encourage all patients to make Botox and other anti-aging treatments a part of their long-term skin care strategy to maintain a smooth, healthy and more youthful appearance.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a neurotoxin made from a purified form of botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for causing dynamic lines and wrinkles to appear with every facial expression you make. Neurotoxins, also called neuromodulators, are a type of medication that disrupts the communication between nerve cells and muscles.

When injected into specific muscles, Botox blocks the release of a chemical called acetylcholine, which helps control muscle movement. Without acetylcholine, the muscles aren’t able to contract as strongly, resulting in a smoothing effect on the overlying skin.

Botox is typically injected into the forehead, around the eyes and between the eyebrows to treat wrinkles in these areas. The injections are precise and targeted, allowing for natural-looking results without affecting the surrounding muscles. They only take a few minutes to administer, making Botox a convenient and popular treatment option.

Botox® Treatment Areas

Botox is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles that appear with every facial expression you make. This includes crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead wrinkles. However, it can be used off-label to address other age-related concerns, such as bunny lines on the nose, neck wrinkles, chin dimples and a gummy smile.

In addition to smoothing out unwanted lines and wrinkles, Botox is also frequently used to treat certain medical conditions. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), muscle spasms in adults, urinary incontinence and more.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are lines that appear with every wink, frown or smile. Also called expression lines, these wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle contractions that become etched into the skin over time. Typically, they aren’t visible when the face is at rest. Examples of dynamic wrinkles that frequently develop as we age include crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines.

Botox injections are a popular treatment option for dynamic wrinkles. By blocking nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract, Botox temporarily reduces muscle activity to smooth away expression lines and wrinkles. Relaxing the facial muscles with Botox can also slow the aging process and help prevent new wrinkles from forming in treated areas.

Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are wrinkles that appear even when the face is at rest. These wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors, including natural aging, gravity, sun damage and volume loss caused by decreased collagen production. Examples of static wrinkles include nasolabial folds, marionette lines and neck creases.

Static wrinkles are best treated with dermal fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane® or the RHA® Collection. Dermal fillers use ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to replenish lost volume where it’s needed most and smooth away unwanted lines and wrinkles, restoring a more youthful appearance. If you have both static and dynamic wrinkles, Botox and dermal fillers can be used separately or together for more comprehensive results, helping you achieve your desired look.

Your Botox® Treatment at Resurrect Skin MD

Botox is a relatively quick and easy in-office procedure, but requires a good deal of skill, precision and knowledge to deliver results that aren’t stiff or exaggerated. Dr. Burns and his team have years of experience in administering Botox injections and have mastered the art of enhancing your natural beauty without compromising your unique facial expressions.

During your appointment, your provider will use a thin, fine needle to inject a small amount of Botox beneath the skin and directly into specific facial muscles. Each injection takes just a few seconds and is generally well-tolerated by most patients, but the treatment area can be numbed beforehand with a topical anesthetic or ice to ensure your comfort.

Once your injections are complete, you can return home with no recovery or downtime. From start to finish, Botox treatments typically take less than 30 minutes to complete for minimal disruption to your busy day.

Botox® Recovery & Results

After your Botox appointment, you can expect minimal side effects or downtime. Mild swelling or redness may occur in treated areas, but this is normal and typically subsides within hours. Some patients also experience light bruising at the injection sites, which can take a few days to fade completely. In the meantime, it can easily be covered with makeup.

To ensure the best possible results, we will provide aftercare instructions such as avoiding strenuous activity for 24 hours, not rubbing or massaging the treated area and abstaining from excessive alcohol consumption. It’s also important to stay hydrated and maintain a healthy lifestyle to promote optimal healing and prolong the effects of treatment.

Your results will typically become visible within a few days after your treatment. During this time, your skin may feel tighter than usual as the Botox takes effect. Once your full results have developed, you can expect them to last between three and six months. Botox can be safely repeated as needed when you begin to notice muscle activity returning to treated areas. In fact, regular touch-ups can keep your skin looking smooth and youthful year-round!

FAQs

You have questions? We have answers.

How does Botox® Compare to Dermal Fillers?

Botox® and dermal fillers are both popular treatment options for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but they work quite differently to achieve their results. Botox uses botulinum toxin to relax the muscles and reduce the appearance of expression lines, while dermal fillers restore lost volume to smooth away static lines and wrinkles. Both can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to help you achieve more youthful-looking skin.

Can Botox® Be Reversed?

If you’re unhappy with your results, Botox injections cannot be directly reversed. However, the effects of Botox will eventually wear off as the body metabolizes the botulinum toxin. This typically takes 3-6 months, depending on the individual and the treated area. Because Botox cannot be reversed, it’s important to choose a qualified and experienced provider like the skin care experts at Resurrect Skin MD, who can accurately assess your needs and administer the appropriate dosage for achieving natural-looking results.

Why Do Some People Become Resistant to Botox® Injections?

Botox is an effective way to temporarily reduce the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles, but some people may become resistant to the treatment over time. This can be frustrating for those looking for a quick, simple way to maintain a youthful appearance.

Botox resistance develops when the immune system develops antibodies in response to some of the proteins used to stabilize the botulinum toxin, reducing and sometimes even negating the effects of treatment. Botox can also be less effective in patients who metabolize the drug rapidly, leading to underwhelming or short-lived results.

If you’ve developed an immunity to Botox or you notice that it doesn’t work for as long as you’d like, there are alternatives you can try, such as Dysport® and Daxxify®. Depending on your unique concerns, goals and lifestyle, Dr. Burns can recommend the right neurotoxin to help you achieve and maintain the most satisfying results possible.

How Much Does Botox® Cost?

The cost of Botox injections is based on several factors, such as the area being treated, the number of units required to be effective and the experience of your provider. On average, you can expect Botox to cost between $10 and $20 per unit. The amount of Botox needed to achieve your aesthetic goals will vary depending on the severity of your concerns, but common areas such as the forehead typically require 20 to 30 units, while smaller areas like around the eyes can be treated with 10 to 20 units. During your consultation, Dr. Burns and his team will recommend the appropriate number of units for your treatment.
