What Is Genius RF Microneedling by Lutronic?

Genius combines the proven benefits of microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy) with the delivery of radiofrequency energy into the skin.

Microneedling uses tiny needles to penetrate the skin. The injuries are so small that they are rarely visible to the naked eye, but they are enough to trigger a natural healing response from the body. The body responds by generating new collagen and elastin fibers to heal the wounds. This process gradually remodels the skin, producing surface-level benefits as well as improvements in skin volume, firmness and tautness.

Radiofrequency microneedling has a similar effect but a different mechanism of action. RF energy travels through the microneedles into the dermis (the second layer of the skin) and generates heat. A thermal injury results, which potentially leads to more robust collagen and elastin growth and a skin tightening effect.

Whereas a laser may not be the best option for darker skin due to the risk of unwanted pigment reactions, RF treatments do not carry the same level of risk. What Should I Expect During My Genius RF Microneedling Treatment?

Your RSMD provider will start your treatment by applying a topical anesthetic in one of our uniquely designed numbing rooms. You can rest in one of our massage chairs while the topical cream takes effect and enjoy music or TV options of you like. Although Genius treatments are applied under topical anesthetic only, they are not entirely sensation-free. The combination of topical agents and Pro-Nox™ helps keep you comfortable during the procedure.

Once your skin is numbed, your provider will continue the treatment by applying the tip of the handpiece evenly across your skin in a stamping motion. The needles rapidly penetrate down into the dermis as the needle tips deliver the radiofrequency energy. This process typically lasts 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and location of the treatment area and the intensity of the treatment.

Can I Combine Genius With Any Other Treatments?

At Resurrect Skin MD, we love pairing Genius with the MOXI laser. MOXI treats the upper portion of the skin and provides a quicker visible improvement, polishing the skin and removing unwanted pigmentation and texture. Simultaneously, Genius works on a deeper level to produce a gradual result by tightening and plumping the skin. This combination therapy is one of our most popular procedures.

What Is the Downtime for Genius RF Microneedling?

Expect some redness and swelling after your RF microneedling treatment. You may look as if you have a mild sunburn. Other potential side effects include dryness, itchiness, tightness, mild bruising, scattered pinpoint bleeding and temporary marks from the needles.

It’s best to avoid strenuous exercise and wearing makeup for the first 24 hours. Most people can return to work the next day, though some may wait an additional day or two for any residual side effects to settle.

Your post-treatment skin will be sensitive. Avoid aggressive cleansing and harsh skincare ingredients that could cause irritation. Be diligent about sunscreen use and minimizing sun exposure for at least 14 days.

How Long Does It Take to See Results From Genius RF Microneedling?

You may notice your skin developing a healthy glow within the first week after your treatment, but the most impactful results will not emerge until your skin has had time to generate new collagen and elastin. This is not an immediate process, so be patient.

Improvements may start becoming visible around four weeks post-treatment. Full results develop in three to six months.

How Many Genius RF Microneedling Treatments Do I Need?

Most patients benefit from having two to three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. Once we’ve achieved maximum improvement, maintenance treatments on a yearly basis will help keep collagen and elastin production at higher levels.
