What Is Brella?

Brella is a single-use prescription patch designed to suppress sweat production for adults with excessive underarm sweating (primary axillary hyperhidrosis). Cleared by the FDA in April 2023, the Brella patch is applied to your underarm during an in-office treatment. After just a few minutes, a heat sensation develops and then the patch is removed. The heat sensation stops immediately. The patch is discarded, and you are free to go about your day. One application can produce results that begin in a few days and last two to four months.

Brella was named a winner of the 2023 Allure Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award, which recognizes the most innovative new products in the aesthetic industry. It is the first in-office sweat control innovation to receive this honor.

How Does Brella Work?

Brella takes a novel approach to sweat reduction based on targeted alkali thermolysis (TAT) technology. This process leverages a simple scientific reaction: when sodium encounters water, heat is produced.

The Brella patch is composed of a thin sheet of sodium with an adhesive backing. When applied to the underarm, the sodium-rich patch interacts with the sweat (which is mostly water) and triggers a localized heat generation response. This results in a microthermal injury to the sweat glands, which temporarily inactivates them.

What Is the Brella Treatment Process?

A few preparation steps ensure you get the most out of your Brella treatment. Please shave at least 48 hours before your appointment. Your underarm should have nothing more than stubble when the patch is applied. Wear loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment and, if possible, refrain from using any antiperspirants or deodorants because the patch works best when you sweat. Do not do anything on the day of treatment to reduce your natural sweating process. Let us know if you notice any redness, discomfort, dermatitis or other skin concerns in the treatment area.

To perform the treatment, your provider will first take steps to induce sweating. Once sweating has begun, your provider will thoroughly cleanse your underarms, then apply a patch on one side for up to three minutes. You might feel warmth or sensations resembling pins and needles while the patch is in place. After the designated time, your provider will remove and discard the patch and clean the treated area. The same procedure will then be repeated for the other underarm with a new patch. Induction of sweating may add a few extra minutes to your treatment.

There is no downtime after your Brella treatment. You may observe some minor redness or irritation in the treated area, which generally subsides immediately post-procedure. A few patients experience tenderness or sensitivity lasting up to 48 hours.

You can resume your normal hair removal, deodorant or antiperspirant use right away. However, if your underarms feel irritated or tender, wait until it resolves.

What Results Can Be Achieved With Brella?

Many patients are thrilled to notice improvements within just a few days of their Brella treatment. This swift response time means that you won’t have to wait long to begin enjoying the benefits. The results of a single treatment typically last two to four months, with some individuals reporting effects extending even longer.
