Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

Rejuvenate your eyes for a more youthful, refreshed look

Compared to the rest of the face, the eyelids tend to show the signs of aging the soonest. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids. Depending on which techniques are used, blepharoplasty can target puffiness, drooping, sagging, loose skin and other concerns that make the eyes look old or tired.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery are two distinctly different procedures in regard to the risks, benefits and intended results. Upper eyelid surgery makes the eyes look more open, refreshed and alert by removing excess skin and tissue that causes them to droop or sag. It can also correct vision problems caused by the upper eyelid skin hanging over the lashes and in front of the eyes.

Lower eyelid surgery targets creases, lines and bags beneath the eyes to rejuvenate the area. It works by addressing the skin, fat or muscle to get rid of dark circles and puffiness, creating a more youthful appearance. Dr Burns’ primary goal is to avoid over-tightening of the lower lid, which can cause “rounding” or a “pulling down” of the lower lid. He achieves this in most of his patients through a technique that does not require an external incision. He makes a tiny incision on the inside of the lower lid and removes an appropriate amount of fat to reduce the bulge and puffiness of the lower lid. He then uses his expertise to tighten the lower lid with a special laser which is ideal for this treatment.

If indicated, most patients choose to undergo both an upper and lower blepharoplasty for a comprehensive result that looks balanced. However, each individual is different, and some just need the upper or lower lid addressed. As always, the patient is in charge of choosing the best procedure for their needs and wishes.

Eyelid surgery can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures at the same time very safely. Combining procedures is an efficient way to utilize one operation to address all of the patient’s facial aging needs.
