WHAT IS SCULPTRA?

Sculptra is a dermal filler used to treat the signs of aging. But unlike other fillers that use hyaluronic acid to plump up treated areas and eliminate unwanted lines or wrinkles, Sculptra is in a class of its own. It’s formulated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible ingredient that rejuvenates from within and adds volume over time.

Instead of replacing lost volume or freezing the facial muscles, Sculptra works deep beneath the surface of the skin to target one of the underlying causes of facial aging rather than just the symptoms. When injected, it activates the body’s natural regenerative process and stimulates collagen production — an essential component of healthy, youthful skin — to gradually erase lines, wrinkles and facial folds. No other dermal filler revitalizes your skin’s natural collagen to replenish its volume and inner structure.

“In a crowded field of dermal fillers with numerous options, Sculptra stands out as truly unique. It acts as both a short-term volumizer and long-lasting collagen stimulator for results that look and feel more natural.”

Dr. Burns

HOW DOES SCULPTRA WORK?

Sculptra works by stimulating the body's own collagen production. When Sculptra is injected into the skin, the PLLA microparticles are absorbed and trigger a process called neocollagenesis, which is the formation of new collagen. Over time, the newly formed collagen helps to restore lost volume, eliminate wrinkles and improve skin texture.

Collagen is a protein that provides structural support to the skin, keeping it from sagging and giving it a plump, youthful appearance. However, the body's natural collagen production decreases with age, leading to unwanted lines, creases and sagging. By promoting collagen production from within, Sculptra can address these signs of aging at the source.

BENEFITS OF SCULPTRA

  • Replenishes lost collagen from within
  • Smoothes away facial lines and wrinkles
  • Results gradually appear over time
  • Improvements can last up to 2 years
  • Little to no risk of allergic reactions
  • 94% patient satisfaction rate

IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR SCULPTRA

The ideal candidates for Sculptra are those who are experiencing age-related volume loss in the upper, mid or lower face. Some concerns it is commonly used to treat include:

  • Deep facial wrinkles
  • Marionette lines
  • Sagging cheeks
  • Hollow temples
  • Smile lines
  • Chin wrinkles or dimples
  • Creases or folds
  • Mild-to-moderate lipoatrophy (facial fat loss)

If you’re interested in Sculptra, you should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the outcome of treatment. You should also be willing to undergo multiple treatment sessions to achieve your desired results. Sculptra may not be suitable for patients with severe allergies or autoimmune disorders. During your initial consultation, one of our aesthetic experts will evaluate your concerns and review your medical history to ensure the best possible results and help determine if this treatment option is right for you.

SCULPTRA DOWNTIME, RECOVERY & RESULTS

Sculptra is a minimally-invasive, in-office procedure with no downtime or recovery. However, you may experience some minor swelling, bruising or redness in treated areas, which is normal and should subside within a few days. It’s important to follow Dr. Burns’ post-treatment instructions to ensure the best possible results, such as limiting strenuous activities for the next 24 hours. Other guidelines may include staying out of the sun, minimizing alcohol intake and avoiding the use of blood thinners such as aspirin or NSAIDs.

Sculptra provides a gradual improvement in skin volume and texture over several treatment sessions, typically spaced a few weeks apart. You can expect to see results that last up to two years or more, depending on factors such as your age and the amount of correction needed. Sculptra can provide a more natural-looking reduction in the signs of aging compared to other fillers, as the production of new collagen can create a subtle and youthful result.

You may require two to four treatment sessions to achieve an optimal outcome, with appointments typically spaced four to six weeks apart. It is important to note that while some patients may notice an initial improvement in the treated area, the results of Sculptra are not immediate. Instead, they’ll continue to develop over the next several months.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT

Before your treatment, our talented team will evaluate your concerns, ask questions about your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals in more detail. Then, the treatment area will be mapped out to ensure accurate and precise results that reflect your desired outcome. Sculptra is injected using a fine needle that most patients find to be tolerable, but a topical numbing cream may be applied to maximize your comfort during the procedure.

Once everything is ready, our aesthetic experts will inject Sculptra into targeted areas of the face. Multiple injections are typically needed to sufficiently restore lost volume, but the amount needed varies depending on your needs and goals.

From start to finish, your entire treatment can be completed in 30 minutes or less, making Sculptra the perfect “lunchtime” procedure with minimal disruption to your busy day. Afterward, you’ll be free to resume your normal routine with few restrictions and no downtime.

“Sculptra is a great, long-lasting treatment option for patients that want natural-looking results. It’s the only dermal filler that acts as a “bio-activator” and stimulates collagen production from within, allowing the skin to volumize gradually.”

Dr. Burns

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The amount of Sculptra needed to achieve the desired effect varies from patient to patient, depending on how much of the skin’s inner structure needs to be restored. Generally, a series of three appointments are needed to address the most common signs of aging. Once injected beneath the skin, the formula is absorbed by the body and begins stimulating collagen production. Final results can take up to three months to appear. The price of Sculptra is determined by how many vials are used. Most people need at least one vial of Sculptra for each decade of age— so a 50-year-old patient would require five vials to sufficiently correct volume loss. Our expert aestheticians work with each individual to develop a personalized treatment tailored to their unique needs and goals.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Sculptra is made with synthetic PLLA and does not contain any animal products in its formulation, significantly minimizing the risk of allergic reactions. The potential side effects of Sculptra are similar to those you’d expect to see with any injectable treatment, such as swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness in the treatment area. However, Dr. Burns’ highly-qualified team of injectors have years of experience with Sculptra and take great care to minimize the risk of visible side effects. Makeup can be used to cover any bruising that does occur.

MINIMIZE THE APPEARANCE OF SCARS WITH SCULPTRA

Sculptra is gaining traction as an off-label treatment for scars on the face and body. Its volumizing and collagen-producing effect can help fill in pitted acne scars, but Sculptra can also be used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and surgical scars, working to improve the skin’s elasticity and firmness. During your consultation, our aesthetic experts can evaluate your concerns to determine if a Sculptra scar treatment is right for you.

For discolored scars, this treatment may provide more dramatic results when combined with microneedling, erbium laser resurfacing, the HALO laser or BBL HERO treatments. As one of the world’s foremost laser experts, Dr. Burns and his talented team can review the available options and recommend the right device for your exact needs, developing a personalized treatment to eliminate your scars and help you achieve your goals.

FAQs

You have questions? We have answers.

WHAT MAKES SCULPTRA DIFFERENT?

Sculptra is an injectable treatment used to reduce the signs of aging in the upper, mid and lower face, much like neurotoxins or dermal fillers. However, the similarities end there, because Sculptra is in a class of its own. Unlike other injectables, which use botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid to eliminate unwanted lines and wrinkles, Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible ingredient that stimulates collagen production for longer-lasting results.

WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO GET SCULPTRA?

Most patients who receive Sculptra injections are in their mid-to-late 30s or older. However, Sculptra can work at any age and produce noticeable results for those in their 60s or 70s. If you have more severe signs of aging to address, you can also combine Sculptra with other dermal fillers to help you achieve your desired results.

IS SCULPTRA BETTER THAN BOTOX?

Sculptra works differently than neurotoxins like Botox or Daxxify, so which one is “better” depends on your unique concerns. Neurotoxins erase dynamic lines and wrinkles that appear with facial expressions, while Sculptra addresses volume loss by stimulating collagen production. During your initial appointment, our team can help decide which injectable (or combination of injectables) is right for you.

CAN SCULPTRA BE REVERSED?

Dermal fillers that are made with hyaluronic acid — such as Juvéderm or Restylane — can be reversed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. However, since Sculptra is formulated with PLLA, the effects cannot be reversed after treatment. Therefore, it’s essential that you choose a Sculptra provider such as Dr. Burns and his talented team of aesthetic experts, who have the skill, knowledge and experience to deliver the best possible results.

IS SCULPTRA SAFE?

Sculptra provides a safe way to reduce the signs of aging and enhance your facial contours. The collagen-boosting ingredients are biodegradable, biocompatible and naturally absorbed by the body, so they won’t harm your skin or any underlying tissues. Sculptra is also FDA-approved and has been used since 1999 to diminish unwanted lines, wrinkles and sagging. Finally, its long-lasting results mean fewer treatments are needed to achieve your results, minimizing the risk associated with injectable procedures.
