What Is Sofwave™?

Sofwave is a state-of-the-art ultrasound treatment for lifting, smoothing and tightening your skin.
The Sofwave system is powered by proprietary Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology (SUPERB) technology, and in our opinion, it lives up to its name. This technology delivers ultrasound energy into the skin’s mid-dermis layer at a precise depth of 1.5mm. Targeting this specific area treats skin laxity without affecting the outer layer of the skin or the deeper tissues.

Once it reaches its destination, SUPERB technology can heat the mid-dermis to exactly 60 to 70°C. Having such precise control over the temperature makes all the difference. It’s high enough to stimulate collagen production but low enough to avoid damaging surrounding tissues. This makes the treatment both effective and safe.

How Does Sofwave™ Work?

Sofwave’s ultrasound energy creates a controlled thermal injury in the mid-dermis. Don’t let the word “injury” alarm you – this microscopic damage is what triggers your body’s natural healing response. As your skin gets to work repairing the treated area, it ramps up production of collagen and elastin.

These proteins are the building blocks of firm, youthful skin. If you’ve heard Dr. Burns talk about the four pillars of aging, you may already be aware of how the effects of gravity and diminished collagen and elastin contribute to visible aging. Sofwave helps your skin counteract these effects so it can regain some of its elasticity and smoothness.

This process continues for weeks after your treatment, leading to gradual, natural-looking improvements.

How Does Sofwave™ Compare to Ultherapy®?

We’re often asked how Sofwave measures up to other skin tightening treatments, particularly Ultherapy. Both technologies use ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production, but there are differences that set Sofwave apart.

Treatment Depth

Sofwave’s SUPERB technology delivers energy at a consistent depth of 1.5mm. This precision ensures optimal stimulation of collagen-producing cells without affecting surrounding tissues.

Also very important to consider is that Sofwave’s pattern of energy delivery is a large cylinder instead of the more common tiny balls of effective treatment. This results in a larger area of treatment and therefore increased possibility of new collagen being delivered and deposited in the tissues. The results are much more predictable and uniform.

Ultherapy, on the other hand, can deliver energy at various depths, from 1.5mm up to 4.5mm. While this can be good for treating different layers of tissue, it can also lead to more variability in results and potentially more discomfort during treatment.

Comfort Level

Sofwave has an integrated cooling system that protects the skin’s surface. This makes the procedure more comfortable. Most patients describe what they feel as warm and tingling, rather than painful.
Ultherapy has been known to cause more discomfort during treatment, often requiring pain management strategies.

However, every person’s pain tolerance differs, and we have tools to help significantly if the discomfort is too much. We offer supplemental external cold air, which is very effective in most cases, as well as Pro-Nox (a mix of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen), which helps not only with Sofwave but with many other treatments we offer. We want you focused on the results and the experience, not discomfort.

Treatment Time

Sofwave treatments take roughly 30-45 minutes for a full-face treatment. Ultherapy sessions can last 60-90 minutes for the same area.

Downtime and Recovery

Both Sofwave and Ultherapy are considered no-downtime treatments, but the patient experience can differ.

Most Sofwave patients experience mild side effects and feel comfortable returning to normal activities immediately. Ultherapy patients might have more noticeable swelling, redness and occasional bruising that can last for several days.

What Should I Expect During My Sofwave™ Treatment?

A full-face Sofwave™ treatment typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Before the procedure, your provider will cleanse your skin and apply a clear gel to help the device glide smoothly.

After your skin is prepped, your provider will move the Sofwave handpiece across the treatment area in a precise pattern. You'll feel a heating sensation from the ultrasound energy, along with cooling from the device. Most patients describe the experience as comfortable, with only mild and temporary discomfort.

Is There Downtime After a Sofwave™ Treatment?

You can return to your normal activities immediately after your Sofwave session. We'll give you aftercare instructions before you leave, which generally include:

  • Applying sunscreen diligently
  • Avoiding excessive heat exposure for 24-48 hours
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Keeping your skin hydrated

You may notice mild redness and/or swelling in the treated area. You may also feel a slight warm sensation in your skin. These effects usually subside within a few hours.

In other words, there is virtually no downtime with Sofwave. Our patients appreciate being able to return to their busy lives immediately, while still achieving the results they're looking for.

We take a highly individualized approach to Sofwave treatments, like we do with everything at Resurrect Skin MD. If our team believes more than one session is the optimal approach based on your skin condition and goals, we may recommend a series of two to three treatments.

After you’ve reached your maximum degree of improvement, you can come in for touch-up treatments as you desire. These maintenance treatments help to counteract ongoing aging processes and keep your skin looking its best.

Can Sofwave be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely. We look at all the different ways aging affects you and base your treatment plan on that. For instance, if you have pigmentation issues, we might pair Sofwave with a BroadBand Light treatment or the HALO laser. If volume loss or muscle movement is contributing to your wrinkles, we might include dermal fillers or neurotoxins in your plan.

It is well known that acne scarring is one of the most challenging conditions we face, but a combination of Sofwave and Genius Radiofrequency Microneedling often produces impressive improvement, certainly the best we have seen to date.

What were Sofwave's clinical results?

Science is so important to us that it’s part of our mission statement: bringing skin to life through science, care and compassion. We would never offer a treatment that isn’t backed by a track record of safety and efficacy.

Clinical studies have shown encouraging results for Sofwave. One study found that, at three months post-treatment, 72% of the patients were satisfied with their results and rated them as improved to very much improved. At RSMD, we’ve seen these positive outcomes reflected in our own patients’ experiences.

Is Sofwave painful?

Sofwave was designed with patient comfort in mind. The device’s integrated cooling system helps protect the surface of your skin and minimize discomfort. We use topical anesthetic as another measure to keep you as comfortable as possible. Many of our patients find Sofwave to be more tolerable than other skin tightening treatments they’ve experienced.

Can Sofwave replace a surgical procedure?

Sofwave is a great solution for many of our patients, but it’s not a replacement for surgical procedures like a facelift or neck lift. We recommend Sofwave for those with mild to moderate skin laxity who aren’t ready for surgery, or for maintaining results after a surgical procedure. It is not comparable to surgery if you have significant skin laxity and deep facial creases.

Does Sofwave cause fat loss?

This question is coming up more and more often with treatments that use radiofrequency or ultrasound. We understand the concern, and the short answer is no, Sofwave will not cause facial fat loss. The ultrasound energy is targeted to a specific depth where collagen-producing cells are located; it does not travel deep enough to affect the underlying fat layer.

Can a laser address sagging skin instead?

We can do remarkable things with lasers, but they typically aren’t as effective for addressing skin laxity as treatments like Sofwave. Lasers work on the skin’s surface or upper layers, while Sofwave’s ultrasound energy penetrates deeper where it can more effectively stimulate collagen production and remodeling.
