Dermaplaning

A gentle way to brighten your complexion and achieve ultra-smooth skin

Over time, dead skin cells can accumulate on the face and trap dirt, bacteria and oil beneath the surface, clogging your pores and making your complexion seem dull or worn. Dermaplaning is an exfoliation treatment that removes this debris to rejuvenate your appearance. If you’re looking for a fresh, “lit-from-within” glow, dermaplaning is a wonderful starting point.

One of the many beauties of dermaplaning is its simplicity and comfort. It’s a quick, pain-free procedure with zero downtime — perfect for anyone looking to enhance their skin without a long appointment in the office or an inconvenient recovery period. Plus, it doesn’t involve any invasive instruments or harsh chemicals, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning works by using a sterile blade to gently scrape away the top layer of skin and peach fuzz for a brighter, healthier look. The technique is painless and helps to unclog pores, stimulate cellular turnover and improve your overall tone and texture. Other benefits include helping cosmetics to go on smoother for a more flawless application.

Although dermaplaning may sound similar to conventional shaving, there are distinct differences. Shaving uses a razor with multiple blades, designed primarily to cut hair. Dermaplaning, on the other hand, utilizes a sterile, surgical-grade scalpel designed not only to remove hair but also to gently exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin. The scalpel is handled by a qualified aesthetic provider, ensuring a level of precision and safety that isn't guaranteed with at-home shaving.

Dermaplaning is excellent as a standalone treatment, but it can be combined with other aesthetic procedures for improved results. It’s particularly popular with the HydraFacial, as it allows for deeper hydration and nourishment from the applied serums. It can also help other skin care products penetrate more easily to enhance their effects.

What Are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

Don’t be deceived by the simplicity of dermaplaning. Though it isn’t a high-tech treatment, it can deliver noticeable benefits for a special event or as a regular addition to your skincare routine:

  • Removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hairs (peach fuzz)
  • Improves the overall tone and texture of the skin
  • Enhances the effectiveness of skin care products
  • Preps the face for additional procedures
  • Great complement to the Hydrafacial

"Dermaplaning is like pressing the reset button on your skin. Not only does it whisk away dull skin cells and peach fuzz, but it also creates a clear canvas that enhances the effectiveness of your skincare products and leaves your skin feeling incredibly smooth. I like to think of it as a foundational step towards achieving and maintaining a radiant, healthy complexion."

Dermaplaning vs. Dermabrasion: What Is the Difference?

Dermaplaning should not be confused with dermabrasion. These treatments have similar sounding names, but they differ vastly in their process, intensity and recovery time, as well as the skin concerns they address.

Dermabrasion is a more aggressive resurfacing technique. It involves using a specialized device that “sands” the skin, removing the upper layers to treat more substantial skin issues — such as deeper wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars or uneven skin texture.

Being a more intensive treatment, dermabrasion typically involves a recovery period. Patients may experience redness, swelling and sensitivity for a few days to weeks post-treatment. It is not suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive skin or certain skin conditions.

In comparison, dermaplaning is gentler, has no downtime and works for nearly all skin types. It’s an effective option for those looking for a quick, easy way to remove unwanted facial hair and revitalize their skin.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

One of the advantages of dermaplaning is its versatility – it is well-suited to a wide variety of ages and skin types, with few restrictions or exceptions.

In general, you might be a candidate for dermaplaning if you:

  • Have "peach fuzz" you would like to remove
  • Want an instant way to refresh your complexion
  • Want to enhance the effectiveness of your skincare products
  • Want to prepare your skin for other aesthetic treatments
  • Prefer a procedure with no downtime
  • Have sensitive skin or allergies that make other facial treatments unsuitable for you

However, dermaplaning is not the best option for everyone, at all times. For instance, if you currently have an active acne outbreak, any infections, or cold sores the procedure could potentially cause further inflammation.

As with any cosmetic procedure, the best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for dermaplaning is to have a consultation with one of the knowledgeable and experienced providers at Resurrect Skin MD.

Is Any Preparation Required Before Dermaplaning?

Preparing for dermaplaning is typically straightforward. As it is a non-invasive procedure, it doesn’t require extensive preparation on your part, but following a few simple steps can help ensure your skin is in the best condition possible for your appointment.

  • Maintain Hydration — Keep your skin well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using a good quality moisturizer in the days leading up to the treatment. Hydrated skin is always happier skin.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure — Try to minimize direct sun exposure for a few days before your treatment. Sun-damaged or sunburned skin could be further irritated by the procedure.
  • Skip Other Treatments — If you regularly receive other skin treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion, it’s best to pause these a week or two before dermaplaning to avoid any potential skin sensitivity or irritation.
  • Postpone Hair Removal — Avoid other types of facial hair removal, such as waxing or threading, a few days before your treatment, as some can increase skin sensitivity and the dermaplaning will remove any vellus hair from your face.

What Should I Expect During My Dermaplaning Treatment?

When you arrive for your dermaplaning session, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff and taken to one of our comfortable treatment rooms.

Your treatment will begin with a thorough cleansing of your skin to remove any makeup, oils and dirt, ensuring a clean slate for the dermaplaning procedure. Once your skin is clean, your provider will use a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to gently skim off dead skin cells and peach fuzz hair. You might feel a mild scraping sensation, but rest assured, dermaplaning is painless.

Before you leave, we’ll apply a soothing serum or moisturizer to your skin and provide you with aftercare instructions. The entire process typically takes only 30 minutes, making it an ideal lunchtime treatment.

Is There Downtime After a Dermaplaning Treatment?

Dermaplaning has no required downtime. Most patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure, with little or no indication they had a treatment done.

Your skin may appear slightly pink and feel a bit sensitive immediately after the treatment, but these minor side effects typically subside within a few hours. We recommend avoiding intense sun exposure and strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-procedure to allow your skin to rest.

We also recommend being mindful of your skincare routine following dermaplaning. In addition to using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, we suggest incorporating hydrating and soothing products into your routine to help nourish your newly exposed skin cells. This is an excellent opportunity to maximize the efficacy of your skincare products, as dermaplaning allows for better absorption.

How Long Does It Take to See Results From Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning offers immediate gratification. As soon as the treatment is complete, you can see an improvement in the appearance of your skin. Your complexion will appear brighter, smoother and more radiant, as if you’ve turned on a light from within.

Over time, dermaplaning’s benefits can extend beyond the immediate glow. The exfoliation process can help trigger cellular renewal, meaning your skin will continue to improve with regular treatments.

How Many Dermaplaning Treatments Do I Need?

While dermaplaning provides noticeable results from the first session, optimal skin rejuvenation is typically achieved with a series of treatments. Our team will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, ensuring the best possible outcomes for your skin.

The longevity of your results will depend on your skin condition, lifestyle factors and the rate at which your skin naturally regenerates. On average, our skin renews itself every 28 to 30 days. Many patients choose to schedule dermaplaning appointments about a month apart to keep their skin consistently bright and smooth.
