Is Any Preparation Required Before Dermaplaning?
Preparing for dermaplaning is typically straightforward. As it is a non-invasive procedure, it doesn’t require extensive preparation on your part, but following a few simple steps can help ensure your skin is in the best condition possible for your appointment.
- Maintain Hydration — Keep your skin well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using a good quality moisturizer in the days leading up to the treatment. Hydrated skin is always happier skin.
- Avoid Sun Exposure — Try to minimize direct sun exposure for a few days before your treatment. Sun-damaged or sunburned skin could be further irritated by the procedure.
- Skip Other Treatments — If you regularly receive other skin treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion, it’s best to pause these a week or two before dermaplaning to avoid any potential skin sensitivity or irritation.
- Postpone Hair Removal — Avoid other types of facial hair removal, such as waxing or threading, a few days before your treatment, as some can increase skin sensitivity and the dermaplaning will remove any vellus hair from your face.
What Should I Expect During My Dermaplaning Treatment?
When you arrive for your dermaplaning session, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff and taken to one of our comfortable treatment rooms.
Your treatment will begin with a thorough cleansing of your skin to remove any makeup, oils and dirt, ensuring a clean slate for the dermaplaning procedure. Once your skin is clean, your provider will use a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to gently skim off dead skin cells and peach fuzz hair. You might feel a mild scraping sensation, but rest assured, dermaplaning is painless.
Before you leave, we’ll apply a soothing serum or moisturizer to your skin and provide you with aftercare instructions. The entire process typically takes only 30 minutes, making it an ideal lunchtime treatment.
Is There Downtime After a Dermaplaning Treatment?
Dermaplaning has no required downtime. Most patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure, with little or no indication they had a treatment done.
Your skin may appear slightly pink and feel a bit sensitive immediately after the treatment, but these minor side effects typically subside within a few hours. We recommend avoiding intense sun exposure and strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-procedure to allow your skin to rest.
We also recommend being mindful of your skincare routine following dermaplaning. In addition to using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, we suggest incorporating hydrating and soothing products into your routine to help nourish your newly exposed skin cells. This is an excellent opportunity to maximize the efficacy of your skincare products, as dermaplaning allows for better absorption.
