Not all IPL devices are created equal. Dr. Burns has had many different IPLs in his office over the years and was one the leaders in teaching this technology to hundreds and hundreds of colleagues with the Lumenis Photofacial device. But that technology is now archaic compared to the BBL revolution.

We’ve long been believers in BroadBand Light therapy, and in our opinion, there is no question that the Sciton BBL devices are the best in the business. Dr. Burns spent years involved in the development and launch of Sciton’s BBL HERO technology, and it’s one of our flagship treatments here at Resurrect Skin MD. BBL HERO distanced itself from the field of IPLs by its supreme energy, unmatched speed and powerful cooling system. This offered better results achieved in shorter time periods and in a safer manner.

What Is BBL HEROic by Sciton?

Exposure to sunlight, especially our powerful Texas sun, is the number one cause of premature facial aging. The long-term effects of UV damage include fine lines, wrinkles, dry skin, visible blood vessels, discoloration, brown age spots, and other skin changes we collectively refer to as “photoaging”.

Light-based treatments like lasers or IPL devices are the most effective tools we have to fight photoaging. A laser is a single wavelength — think of it as a very accurate weapon to hit a very specific target. IPL devices have many many wavelengths (from approximately 400 to 1500 microns) and use filters to allow only a certain “band” of wavelengths to reach the patient’s skin.

Like its predecessors, BBL HERO and the original BBL, BBL HEROic is an advanced IPL system that uses BroadBand Light (BBL) to treat sun damage and rejuvenate the skin.

BBL HEROic directs pulses of light energy in a wide spectrum of wavelengths at damaged skin. This process heats and destroys excess brown pigment (melanin), improves skin texture and pore size, and triggers collagen production for deeper rejuvenation. BBL HEROic is effective and safe for a range of skin types.

Post-treatment, you may experience redness or pinkness in the treated areas, which resolves in an hour. The treatment is comfortable enough to not require any anesthesia, not even topical for many patients. If you are worried about your comfort, Zimmer air cooling is all that is required.

We also have Pro-Nox™ at our office, just in case, but it is rarely needed for BBL HEROic. The amazing, almost unbelievable aspect of this treatment is that there is essentially no downtime — no redness, swelling or bruising in 99% of cases. 

BBL HEROic vs. BBL HERO: What Is the Difference?

BBL HEROic takes BBL HERO’s technology to the next level. Both systems utilize Sciton’s High Energy Rapid Output (HERO) system, but BBL HEROic introduces space age advancements that make the treatment more precise, effective and comfortable.

The highlight is BBL HEROic’s innovative Intelligent Control (IC) and Skin Positioning System™ (SPS) technologies. These features work together to improve the treatment for both patient and practitioner:

  • Intelligent Control acts as the system’s “brain,” processing real-time data to ensure we deliver consistent energy across every treatment area.
  • The Skin Positioning System uses advanced motion-tracking to monitor the handpiece’s movement. This helps us conduct more precise and uniform treatments, and also minimizes the sensation of “hot spots” that can occur with light-based treatments.

Sciton competes with SpaceX and NASA for the high-tech parts that drive this device and positioning system. There is no other system currently that can determine through positional GPS systems exactly where the handpiece is to the millimeter. We can deliver more energy, safely and comfortably, and in a shorter amount of time, which translates into outstanding results

While BBL HERO remains an excellent treatment option, BBL HEROic allows us to treat a wider range of skin concerns more effectively and efficiently than ever before, with enhanced safety and comfort for our patients. It is particularly helpful for larger areas like the neck, chest, arms and legs, as it is twice as fast as HERO and 9-10 times faster than standard BBL.

Am I a Good Candidate for BBL HEROic?

BBL HEROic is a versatile system that can be customized for nearly any skin type or goal, although there are challenges with extremely dark skin in which modifications need to be made. A consultation will ultimately determine if you are a good candidate, but most patients are.

During the procedure, we can adjust the device settings and swap out filters to target your specific skin concerns. Our team is extremely knowledgeable about this technology, as we were one of the first clinics in the world to have it. Based on this expertise, we will make sure your treatment is tailored to give you the best results possible while keeping you comfortable and safe.

Although BBL HEROic is available for most patients, it may not be right for everyone. You might not be a candidate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have certain medical conditions or use certain medications that increase light sensitivity
  • Have a very dark skin tone (Fitzpatrick skin type VI)
  • Have an active skin infections or wound in the treatment area

What Should I Expect During My BBL HEROic Treatment?

Your BBL HEROic experience at Resurrect Skin MD is designed to be comfortable, efficient, and effective.

On the day of your treatment, please arrive with no makeup, lotions or creams on your skin. You'll be given a special eye shield to wear during the procedure to protect your eyes from the light.

Your provider will move the BBL HEROic handpiece over your skin in a smooth, gliding motion. This will continue until they have covered the treatment area completely and evenly. The device’s built-in high-tech GPS control systems help prevent over-treatment or under-treatment of any one area.

Treatment time varies depending on the area being treated, but BBL HEROic is significantly faster in larger flat areas than previous BBL technologies. A full-face treatment typically takes about 15-20 minutes, while larger body areas may not take much longer. Before you leave, we'll review your post-treatment care instructions so you know how to support your skin for optimal results.

Does BBL HEROic Hurt?

BBL HEROic treatments are well-tolerated by most patients. The sensation is often described as a mild, warm feeling accompanied by a quick, light snap when the pulse is delivered. The device incorporates several features to minimize discomfort, including powerful cooling technology.

It’s worth noting that pain tolerance varies from person to person, and some areas of the body may be more sensitive than others. In over 98% of patients, no topical numbing is needed, but we have methods to minimize discomfort for the rare patients who experience it. The vast majority of our patients find BBL HEROic to be a surprisingly comfortable procedure, especially given the impressive results it delivers.

What Is the Downtime for BBL HEROic?

After your BBL HEROic treatment, your skin may appear slightly red, usually for no longer than an hour to two at the most. Any redness can be concealed with makeup, and you are free to return to your daily routine. Your skin may continue to feel warm for an additional 30 to 60 minutes post-treatment.

While there’s no significant downtime, we do recommend following these guidelines after your treatment:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for 24-48 hours
  • Use gentle, non-irritating skincare products for the first few days
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for at least two weeks

If you’ve had treatment for pigmentation, you may notice the treated areas becoming darker over the next few days. This is a normal part of the healing process. The pigmented areas will rise to the surface of your skin, creating a “coffee ground” appearance. Within one to two weeks, these darkened spots will flake off and leave behind a clearer and more even complexion.

What Results Are Expected With BBL HEROic?

Right after your treatment, you may notice that your skin looks smoother and more radiant. Many of our patients describe an immediate “glow”.

The full results of your BBL HEROic treatment will develop over the following weeks and months, as collagen production and cellular renewal continue. You may notice:

  • Improved skin tone and texture
  • Reduced appearance of sun damage and age spots

One of the most exciting aspects of BroadBand Light technology is that it can change the expression of genes associated with aging. This sounds incredible…because it is! That means we’re not just making surface-level improvements — we’re actually turning back the clock on your skin at a cellular level. With regular treatments, your skin can keep improving over time, rather than just maintaining its current state.

It has been published in prominent scientific journals and further quoted by the Wall Street Journal that if you have three BBL treatments per year for three years, you will turn off your aging skin genes and begin to turn on your youthful skin genes. These genetic changes can be seen easily when assessing your skin. The longer you stay faithful to this process of at least three treatments per year, the better your skin looks, as long as you maintain reasonable protection from the sun.

As a result of this research, in addition to the clinical results and improvement we see every day in our patients, every single RSMD staff member, including Dr. Burns, receives at least three BBLs per year! If you are experiencing aging, BBL can help you turn back the hands of time. If you are young, BBL treatments can help prevent the need for more aggressive treatment in the future. We have not had this possibility in the past.

How Many BBL HEROic Treatments Do I Need?

Because of the impressive science stated above, we strongly encourage all of our patients who can to enter into a long-term membership program that offers the most cost-effective way to receive three BBL sessions per year.

If your skin concerns are more advanced, you may require additional sessions or very effective combination treatments to receive the greatest benefit. Once your goal is achieved, the best way to maintain what you have accomplished is a BBL program which delivers three treatments per year. We call this program BBL STL (Skin to Life™!) and we offer this at RSMD as a package price in an effort to make it easy for everyone.

The results of a BBL treatment are long-lasting, and some may even be permanent if you are diligent about protecting your skin from the sun and stay on the BBL STL program. Additional pigmented and vascular lesions may appear with new sun damage, so apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and avoid extended periods in direct sunlight.
