I believe the quality of your skin may be the biggest factor in maintaining a youthful appearance. There is no doubt that surgical correction may be necessary to correct gravitational aging changes past a certain age. However, optimizing the quality and health of your skin enhances your appearance at any age! Beautiful, healthy skin also optimizes the results of a surgery or laser treatment and ensures that your skin’s appearance matches the overall post-procedure result.

Many of you have asked me for my “optimal skin care regimen.” Although there is no one regimen right for everyone, there are some basic features that I believe are valuable to almost everyone.

Sunscreen UVA/UVB

Sun exposure is the number one reason skin ages prematurely — and the damage isn’t just cosmetic, no matter your skin tone. Sun damage can cause permanent harm if left unabated.

Daily sunscreen use is your best defense against the sun’s powerful ultraviolet rays. Apply a full-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or above each day. Remember: UV rays can penetrate through windows, so protecting your skin is important even if you’re spending time indoors or driving your car

When it comes to choosing a sunscreen, you have more options today than ever before. There are physical sunscreens, chemical sunscreens and some that combine ingredients from both categories. You also have numerous formula choices, including creams, sprays, powders, makeup and skincare products that include SPF, and more. The most important thing is to choose one you will use regularly.

Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar

The dermal-epidermal junction is the structure that joins the outer (epidermal) and second (dermal) layers of the skin. Over time, or due to damage, the DEJ becomes thinner and weaker, causing your skin to lose tautness and develop age spots. Research indicates that addressing the DEJ can noticeably improve skin laxity and appearance.

Revision Skincare’s D.E.J. Cream is an advanced skin-renewing moisturizer designed with the dermal-epidermal junction in mind. Its blend of moisturizers and hydrators, prebiotics and probiotics, lipids, antioxidants and peptides make it one of the most comprehensive anti-aging moisturizers on the market.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants shield your skin from environmental stressors and support your skin's natural production of vitamins C and E. When used regularly, products containing antioxidants help reduce the appearance of surface pigmentation and protect against future damage, leaving your skin looking brighter and more luminous over time.

There are many different antioxidants found in skincare products, some of which are more potent than others. Vitamin C is one of the most well-known and extensively studied antioxidants (often in the form of L-ascorbic acid). Other popular antioxidants include vitamin E, niacinamide, vitamin A (retinol) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

Retinol

Retin-A (tretinoin) is a wonderful and effective product that causes skin cell turnover and more youthful skin, but it is not tolerated by all patients due to the intensity of the peeling and dryness it causes. Products containing retinol are excellent alternatives that produce similar results to Retin-A but are much better tolerated.

Retinol works by increasing skin cell turnover. It helps unclog pores, exfoliate your skin, boost collagen production and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a fresher, plump appearance.

At RSMD, our favorite retinol products are Revision Skincare’s Retinol Complete 1.0 and Alastin’s Renewal Retinol 0.5.
