What Is the HALO Laser by Sciton?

HALO is a revolutionary laser that combines two wavelengths in one machine: a fractional ablative laser that resurfaces the epidermis (surface layer of skin) and a non-ablative laser that targets the dermis (the second and deeper layer of the skin). Both wavelengths are fired into the same spot simultaneously, delivering the benefits of deep dermal remodeling and collagen stimulation alongside the benefits of superficial resurfacing for sun damage and fine lines.

The result is a quicker improvement in pigment and a steady improvement in the quality of the dermis, which creates the HALO glow that everyone notices!

HALO is a unique laser designed for maximum efficacy and safety. The laser evaluates skin temperature while treating and gives feedback on adjusting the energy settings. The treatment becomes more aggressive when the skin heats, so by monitoring the skin temperature, HALO allows us to decrease the energy to get a safe and even treatment.

HALO’s advanced technology provides a wide range of customizable settings. This allows us to effectively treat more difficult complexions and hone in on your unique skin concerns. Your treatment is customized just for you, and just one or two sessions can give you the coveted ‘HALO glow’.

What Does It Mean for a Laser to Be ‘Fractional’?

Fractional technology is a more recent development in the world of aesthetic lasers but has been widely adopted and accepted by patients and physicians alike. A fractional laser treats a fraction of the skin (usually 20-40%) and the rest of the skin (60-80%) is untouched. While it might sound like this would produce uneven results, there are several advantages to the fractional approach. Fractionated therapy allows deeper treatment to be done more safely with more rapid healing.

A fractional laser could be compared to aerating a lawn. Only small areas of the lawn are treated, leaving most of the surface intact, yet the entire lawn benefits. Older, non-fractional technologies result in longer recovery times and more painful treatments, while the HALO laser offers minimal downtime and a more comfortable treatment experience.

The first fractional laser marketed was Fraxel®. Dr. Burns had the first Fraxel device in the country and was involved in the development of both the non-ablative and ablative Fraxel lasers. Our patients saw great results with Fraxel, but we now prefer HALO because it achieves better results with less discomfort.

Ablative Lasers vs. Non-ablative Lasers - What Is the Difference?

To understand why being the world’s first ‘hybrid fractional laser’ is so exciting, you must first understand the two laser modalities.

Ablative Resurfacing

Ablative resurfacing eliminates the outermost layer of skin using heat in a very specific and controlled way. Immediately upon contact, the laser vaporizes the dead, damaged and aging skin cells of the epidermis. Ablative resurfacing is the more aggressive approach, which means it incurs more discomfort and downtime, but it also offers the best results for rejuvenating the skin.

Non-ablative Resurfacing

Non-ablative resurfacing targets the dermis rather than the epidermis. By gently heating this layer of the skin below the epidermis, the laser creates a controlled injury at just the right temperature that prompts a healing response, causing the body to produce new collagen in the area. Non-ablative lasers require less downtime and are often more comfortable. The best results are achieved with a series of treatments that rejuvenate the skin over time.

Every patient has unique needs and desires. In general, HALO plays a role in skin rejuvenation for patients who have more advanced skin damage and aging that might be a stretch for the wonderful BBL HERO/MOXI approach but are not advanced enough to require aggressive laser resurfacing with the Contour Erbium or ProFractional Erbium devices.

Am I a Good Candidate for HALO?

Visible aging is the result of four factors: gravity, dynamic muscle movements, deteriorating skin quality and volume loss.

Laser treatments are some of the most effective ways to address declining skin quality and environmental damage (sun, wind, dryness, etc.). These changes appear as pigmented age spots or sun spots, broken blood vessels, wrinkles of all depths and loss of your skin’s natural glow.

Many laser treatments are contraindicated for darker skin tones, but HALO can be utilized for these skin types and complexions that were previously challenging to treat with a laser. During your initial consultation at Resurrect Skin MD, we will customize your HALO treatment plan for your skin and see if it is a good option for you.

What Is HALO Skin to Life™️ at Resurrect Skin MD?

Many patients who visit RSMD have severe wrinkles that require the most aggressive laser treatments, such as erbium full face laser resurfacing, for optimal results.

But we also see many patients who don’t need such an aggressive approach. These patients often need gentler rejuvenation on their face, cheeks and foreheads and aggressive treatment only on the perioral area and lower eyelids.

To ensure every patient’s needs are met uniquely, Dr. Burns created a treatment called HALO Skin to Life™️. This very popular procedure, proudly originated here at RSMD, centers around an individualized treatment plan that tailors different types and depths of treatment to different areas of the face.

For example, a HALO Skin to Life™️ patient may undergo HALO on their cheeks and forehead, ProFractional resurfacing on their lower eyelids and erbium resurfacing to diminish deeply-ingrained lip lines.

Combining laser treatments like this allows for much faster healing on the majority of the face. We utilize gentle lasers whenever possible and only go more aggressively in precise areas where it is beneficial, such as stubborn lip lines and crepiness under the eyes. This produces a maximum result with the shortest downtime possible.

What Should I Expect During HALO Laser Treatment?

Your HALO treatment will begin with the application of a topical anesthetic. You should feel minimal discomfort as the treatment takes place. The most sensitive areas are typically the eyes, lips and chin.

After the anesthetic has taken effect, your provider will proceed with the treatment by moving the HALO handpiece over top of your skin. The treatment settings will be adjusted as needed to deliver the appropriate balance of ablative and non-ablative energy.

Most patients will feel a warm sensation for 30 to 60 minutes after the treatment. However, air cooling coupled with cool soaks during treatment and the new revolutionary cold face mask post-treatment greatly improve patient comfort and reduce this temporary post-treatment inconvenience. A HALO laser session can be done over your lunch break, or any other hour you can spare during the day.

What Is the Downtime for HALO Laser?

Downtime after a HALO procedure depends on the depth of the treatment. If you opt for a light treatment, your skin can be ready to show off the next day. If you choose a more intense treatment, a few days of downtime are recommended before revealing your rejuvenated skin to the world.

Redness is a natural response to heat and is to be expected. Mild swelling is also common. Your skin may look and feel like it has a sunburn, and it will peel as it renews itself. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer and be diligent with sun protection until your skin has healed.

How Long Does It Take to See Results From HALO Laser?

You may notice subtle improvements within days of your HALO treatment, and your skin will continue to improve over time. Results appear in two stages because HALO incorporates two laser technologies. The ablative laser vaporizes the superficial epidermis, producing more rapid results, while the non-ablative laser heats the dermis to gradually generate new, healthy collagen. The two processes together produce a long-term improvement that rejuvenates your skin and gives you that HALO glow.

We recommend waiting to assess your final results until six months post-treatment, as this is how long it takes for the collagen production and remodeling process to complete.

How Many HALO Laser Treatments Do I Need?

Fractional lasers typically produce the best results when utilized as a series of treatments. Each individual session delivers a deep, effective treatment to a portion of the skin. If repeated on a disciplined regimen, the entire skin is rejuvenated over time.

Your treatment plan will be tailored to your needs. Based on your goals and the condition of your skin currently, our team will help you decide whether to have one or two deeper HALO treatments or multiple gentler treatments over a longer period.

Once your treatment plan is complete, you can expect comprehensive revitalization of your skin, including reduced pore size, diminished fine lines and wrinkles, improved skin reflectivity and glow, and significant removal of pigmentation. Our goal is to provide you with only the treatments you need. If you need a more aggressive approach initially, we will recommend maintenance treatments that are gentler and yet will likely prevent the need for aggressive treatment in the future. For younger patients with healthier skin, we start maintenance treatments earlier so more aggressive treatments may never be needed.
